Alternative Names: Great Pied Hornbill, Great Indian Hornbill Distribution: Uttarakhand, N Bengal including adjoining Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. Straggling along the edges of its range. Disjunctly in W Ghats from roughly south of Bhimashankar and Mumbai till southern tip of the W Ghats in Kanyakumari district (Tamil Nadu) – east till Varusanadu, Palani, and Nilgiri hills. Specimens: BNHS, UMZC, UMMZ, AMNH, FMNH, USNM, YPM, TNHM, BNHM IUCN: Vulnerable. SoIB: Low. WLPA: Schedule-I. CITES: Appendix I. Notes: Populations restricted to primary forests and erstwhile range in NE India is now much contracted. Movements across Indo-Myanmar border explains some records in NE hill states. Patchy in CW Ghats and has never been recorded from anywhere in the E Ghats.
