Distribution: Along the Himalayan foothills from Jammu (straggler), SE Himachal, adjoining Haryana, Uttarakhand, N Uttar Pradesh, sporadic in Gangetic plains, N Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal, all NE hill states, Jharkhand, S W Bengal, E Rajasthan (sporadic), Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana (locally), W Ghats, E Ghats, Deccan (locally), W coastal plains, and E coastal plains (sporadic). Specimens: BNHS, ZSI, NHMUK, UMMZ, AMNH, FMNH, ROM, USNM, YPM, TNHM, MYS, HYD, BNHM Notes: Includes two populations, a northern migratory one and a resident one in the W Ghats. The latter not diagnostic enough to merit subspecies status. Details of migration not worked out.
