[Phylloscopus fuligiventer weigoldi Stresemann, 1923 [HB#1584]] Original Description:Phylloscopusweigoldi Stresemann, 1923 Abhandlungen und Berichte des Königlichen Zoologischen und Anthropologisch-Ethnographischen Museums zu Dresden 16 (2) p.16 Taxonomy: RA2012 includes both tibetanus Ticehurst 1937 and weigoldi Stresemann 1923 under Dusky Warbler. However, Martens et al. (2008, Vertebrate Zoology 58 (2): 252) moved both subspecies under Smoky Warbler – a treatment followed by most modern taxonomies. This also includes mariae Ripley 1951 that has been reported from Manipur and Andamans (AR2001, RA2012). Distribution: Winter: NE India and Andamans. Specimens: BNHS, NHMUK, UMMZ, FMNH Notes: The regional presence of this population that breeds in NE China is tentative. This population was traditionally (AR2001) believed to refer to the 'Dusky Warbler' of E Himalaya and Andamans. Moving these wintering populations under 'Smoky Warbler' is untenable as all call recordings from both NE India and Andamans are of Dusky Warblers. It is likely that traditional taxonomy where weigoldi is treated as the birds wintering in NE India and Andamans may be incorrect and all regional birds may belong to fuscatus sensu stricto. Until a definitive weigoldi specimen from India is located through molecular analysis, this subspecies is treated as tentative for India. Specimens labelled as weigoldi are in the BNHS (Andamans, Narcondam), FMNH (Garo hills, Assam), and UMMZ(Assam).
